I learned software by following it out of the screen.

I’m Alexis Ramis, a Staff Software Engineer in Viña del Mar, Chile. My career started around public infrastructure and mining safety, passed through a medical-AI startup and in-home physical therapy, and now focuses on the systems behind SetSwap’s circular platform for film and television production assets.

I’m most interested in the seams: where code meets operations, where data becomes a decision, and where a system has to keep working long after the interesting part was shipped.

A career built in layers

Ruby on Rails has been the throughline since 2008, but never the whole story. I’ve worked across Android, GIS, PostgreSQL, GraphQL, React, TypeScript, Supabase, background jobs, infrastructure, machine learning, AI integrations, payments, logistics, media, and product work because real systems rarely respect a job-title boundary.

The timeline keeps the overlaps. Learning, freelance work, company-building, and long-running products happened beside one another, and each changed how I approached the next thing.

SetSwap

Senior software engineer

At SetSwap I work across the circular operating platform for film and television production assets: inventory, marketplace transactions, rentals, shipping, sustainability reporting, and semantic search. The work spans the existing Next.js and Supabase product, the Rails platform being built to carry it forward, and the environments, tests, delivery pipelines, and integrations that keep both dependable during the transition.

Stack in practice

Applications
Next.js · React · TypeScript · Ruby on Rails · Hotwire · Tailwind CSS · shadcn/ui · Radix UI
Data & jobs
Supabase · PostgreSQL · pgvector · Deno Edge Functions · Redis · Sidekiq · Solid Cache

Delivery
Nix · devenv · Docker · 1Password · Vercel · GitHub Actions · Sentry · Amplitude · Vitest · React Testing Library · Playwright · RSpec

What stayed: Modernization is product work: preserve what users need while making the system easier to operate, test, and change.

Luna

Staff software engineer

I joined Luna through Koombea and later moved into a direct Staff role. I helped scale the Rails and GraphQL systems behind scheduling, charting, billing, insurance, care coordination, and more than two million in-home physical-therapy appointments, while working across the wider ecosystem of web, mobile, data, automation, and infrastructure applications that supported them.

What stayed: The best backend work disappears into a reliable experience for patients, therapists, and care teams.

Koombea

Senior back-end developer

At Koombea, CurbsideSOS and Luna were my two main, long-running engagements. I also contributed to shorter projects including XUPERMASK, will.i.am's wearable-tech product; Shine, a live-streaming platform for Markiplier; and Orda's integrations for African food businesses. Working alongside client engineers and product managers, I moved from shipping isolated features to improving systems over time; the Luna engagement eventually grew into a direct full-time offer.

Stack in practice

Applications
Ruby on Rails · ActiveAdmin · Vue.js · React · TypeScript · REST APIs · GraphQL · Python / Flask · Elixir / Phoenix
Data & async
PostgreSQL · PostGIS · Redis · Sidekiq · PubNub
Product integrations
Mapbox · Google Maps · Stripe · Twilio · Firebase · Pusher · Jumia APIs
Media & reporting
AWS IVS / MediaLive · AWS MediaStore · Sightengine · libvips · PDF reporting
Platform
AWS S3 / SNS · Terraform · Docker · GitHub Actions · Sentry
Quality
RSpec · Jest · Capybara · Selenium

What stayed: Maintainability is shared work: architecture, product judgment, and communication have to move together.

Medlearn

Co-founder, CEO, and lead developer · Start-Up Chile

A colleague and I built Medlearn around a neural network and conversational interface for symptom-based guidance. Being selected by Start-Up Chile forced the technology to meet product, validation, and company-building questions.

Stack in practice

Applications
Ruby on Rails · JavaScript · Conversational UI · PostgreSQL
Machine learning
Python · Neural networks · Natural-language processing

What stayed: The technically interesting answer is not automatically the responsible or useful product.

E-Mining Technology

Lead software developer · CGRG

I took E-Mining's small MVPs and turned them into CGRG, a production application with automated workflows and continuous ingestion of massive mining datasets. The work was as much about making the system dependable every day as it was about organizing data and generating useful technical reports.

Stack in practice

Applications
Ruby on Rails · JavaScript · HTML · CSS
Data
PostgreSQL · PostGIS · Continuous ingestion · High-volume datasets
Automation & reporting
Automated workflows · Automated reporting · LaTeX-style documents

What stayed: Data pipelines earn trust through traceability, good defaults, and reports people can actually use.

LEMCO

Web designer, developer, and media producer

I rebuilt a materials-testing laboratory's website and video gallery, then filmed and edited technical material used for promotion and in university courses. The job joined interface design, software, and visual explanation.

Stack in practice

Applications
Ruby on Rails · ActiveAdmin · MySQL · JavaScript · jQuery · CoffeeScript · SCSS · Bootstrap
Media
CKEditor · Paperclip · YouTube API · HTML5 video · Video production
Quality
RSpec · Capybara · Selenium

What stayed: A useful system also has to communicate; presentation is part of engineering.

OverseaSolutions

Ruby on Rails developer

For six months I worked remotely with a Uruguayan software company on Rails management tools and business systems, moving between features, bug fixes, and front-end work.

Stack in practice

Applications
Ruby on Rails · JavaScript · HTML · CSS · SQL
Delivery
Git · Remote collaboration

What stayed: Good remote work is mostly clear writing, visible decisions, and dependable follow-through.

Ti-Mining

PlusSecurity developer

With two university colleagues, I built an Android application and a Rails API around georeferenced risk data for mining operations. It was the first system I worked on where delayed or unclear information could have physical consequences.

Stack in practice

Applications
Android · Java · Ruby on Rails · REST APIs
Data & mapping
PostgreSQL · PostGIS · GIS · Geolocation

What stayed: Real-time data is valuable only when it helps someone make a safer decision.

Coursera

Continuous, self-directed study

Online courses became a parallel syllabus for whatever the next project or curiosity demanded. I kept returning to a few broad areas, then carried the useful parts into hands-on work.

Areas explored

Software
Web development · Algorithms · Mathematical thinking
Data & AI
Machine learning · Statistics
Interactive media
Game development · Game design
Visual craft
Photography · Exposure

What stayed: Treat curiosity as part of the job, then make it concrete in production work.

Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María

Ingeniería Civil Informática

I studied computer engineering in Valparaíso and built a strong base in algorithms, systems, databases, and software design. I did not finish the degree; financial and institutional constraints changed the path, but not the work.

Curriculum

Computing
Programming · Data structures · Algorithms · Programming languages
Foundations
Discrete structures · Calculus · Linear algebra · Physics
Systems
Computer architecture · Operating systems · Networks · Databases · Software engineering

What stayed: A formal foundation matters. So does learning how to continue without the formal path.

Dirección de Vialidad · MOP

IT support intern

My first technical job was inside Chile's public-road system. I was the computer guy: diagnosing Windows and hardware problems, repairing and maintaining PCs, and helping people get back to work. Programming appeared only briefly, through a few simple Visual Basic applications.

Stack in practice

Systems
Windows · PC hardware · Maintenance · Troubleshooting
Programming
Visual Basic · Small desktop utilities

What stayed: Look beyond the screen; the surrounding system is part of the problem.
